Stablecoin Market Faces Bank Runs, $300 Billion at Risk
Can you afford to lose 99% of your wealth in an instant? The $300 billion stablecoin market is on shaky ground, warns the Financial Stability Board. With 99% of its value pegged to the US dollar, the market is vulnerable to bank runs even with full reserves. Regulators are discussing the risks at the Oct. 15 G20 meeting, but coordinated cross-border crisis procedures remain undeveloped. Delays in moving reserves between jurisdictions could trigger depegging, forced asset sales, and broader financial-market stress. The FSB warns that stablecoins could face redemption crises even when their total reserves are sufficient but spread across different countries. In an Oct. 12 report, the global financial watchdog said stablecoin issuers operating through affiliated entities in different countries could struggle to meet concentrated withdrawal demands when their reserve assets are held elsewhere. The warning comes ahead of an Oct. 15 meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors. The FSB Chair, Andrew Bailey, said international regulatory coordination remains underdeveloped, leaving authorities without mature arrangements for managing cross-border stablecoin failures.
