Bitcoin Investors Beware: The Uncertain Future of USDC and USDT

The future of Bitcoin might be more uncertain than you think. A recent study by Coin Metrics found that the growth of USDC and USDT stablecoins is not just about buying Bitcoin, but about meeting different kinds of demand for dollar tokens. The study associates stronger non-stablecoin crypto-market returns with slower USDC growth and faster USDT growth, and finds a lending-yield association specific to USDC. This means that the same aggregate reading can sit alongside different investor intentions, making it harder to interpret issuance as fresh spot-buying demand. As a result, Bitcoin investors need to examine what those balances are doing before interpreting issuance. With lending, collateral, and payments also supporting demand for dollar tokens, the picture is more complex than ever. Your wallet might never recover from the uncertainty!

As we dig deeper into the study's findings, we see that the opposing return relationships show why issuer composition matters. The lagged issuer models account for about 13% of USDC's weekly ups and downs in supply growth and 16% of USDT's. But none of the study's models accounts for more than 25%, leaving most movement unexplained. What does this mean for Bitcoin investors? The study's conclusions give them a reason to rethink their strategies. And with new stablecoins emerging, the landscape is changing fast.
